How to Decorate a Bathroom

If well-decorated, a bathroom can feel like a much more personalized space rather. It is a space that is used multiple times in a day.  Whether it is a relaxing bath or a simple skin-care session, your bathroom should be ideally prepared for it.

Thankfully, to do this, you don’t need to perform a whole renovation. Small changes can make a huge impact. Lighting, texture, and colors are some of the things we can adjust when it comes to bathroom decor

So, if you are interested in this, let’s get into more details to help you decorate your bathroom effectively.

  1. Start With a Clear Vision

This is not a sequential list. However, there is one pre-requisite to this process. That is to plan and have a vision before starting to decorate your bathroom. This means your mind shouldn’t only have the thought that I want to upgrade my washroom.

You should also know what type of upgrades you want in your bathroom. In other words, before choosing the tiles, paint colors, and decor pieces, it’s important to have an overall style in mind.

Here are some examples of such styles:

  • Modern and minimalist (clean and neutral tones)
  • Classic (featuring timeless colors, marble textures, and elegant fixtures)
  • Rustic or farmhouse (using natural wood and earthy finishes)
  • Spa-inspired (focused on relaxation with soft lighting and organic materials)

Once you choose a style, you can move on to other things.

  1. Choose the Right Colors

As hinted before, one of the important things to do during bathroom decor is to choose the color palette. As a general rule of thumb, people prefer lighter tones when it comes to bathrooms because they make the bathroom look bigger (white, gray, beige, etc.).

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t use dark colors in a bathroom. Darker colors are used if you prefer to have depth and character in your bathroom.

However, one thing is important. You are advised to stick keep the theme that uses 2 or 3 max colors. Because too many colors in a washroom is just not a good idea. The space doesn’t feel like a place to relax if it is filled with colors.

  1. Focus on the Vanity Area

One of the most customizable things in a washroom is the vanity area. It would not be wrong to say that it serves as the visual centerpiece of the bathroom. It just makes sense that you give it the most thought when it comes to decorating.

However, the good news is that achieving a stylish look is not that complicated. If you have the right  bathroom vanity at the base of your setup, the rest is easy:

  • Choose a mirror that complements the vanity (round for softness and rectangular for a modern feel)
  • Add side lighting for ambiance
  • Keep the countertop minimally styled. Only place the essentials, such as a soap dispenser, tray, or small plant

These are not hard and fast rules, but you usually can’t go wrong with them.

  1. Use Lighting

Lighting doesn’t sound like a very important part of bathroom decor. However, it has one of the biggest impacts on how the space looks. It is often overlooked. Don’t make that mistake.

To start, use warm lights to create a relaxing atmosphere. To take things to the next level, layer your lighting. Here’s how this can be done:

  • Ambient lighting for overall illumination
  • Task lighting around the mirrors and vanities
  • Accent lighting to highlight a few decor items

For these, you can play with various light colors. Additionally, you can install dimmers to make the lighting even more customizable.

  1. Add Materials for Depth

As we said before as well, most bathrooms only have the essentials that make them look flat. That’s why you need to add texture with the help of certain items in your bathroom.

Some examples of such items/materials are given in the following:

  • Textured tiles on shower walls
  • Natural wood elements, such as shelves
  • Woven baskets for storage
  • Soft textiles like bath mats

Such items give your bathroom a bit of personality and make it feel fresher.

Additional Decorative Items

The items mentioned above are still closer to essentials than to decorations. So, here are some decorative accessories to truly personalize the look of your bathroom:

  • Custom soap dispensers and toothbrush holders
  • Trays to group items on countertops
  • Artwork or framed prints
  • An indoor plant

Based on your usage of certain items, you can get these decorative materials.

  1. Keep the Hardware Updated

Until now, we have stressed the items other than the hardware. However, this doesn’t mean that things like your sink and toilet are not important. Sometimes, just having functional and organized hardware makes the biggest difference in terms of how your bathroom looks.

Other things include the cabinets, faucets, shower-heads, door knobs, etc. You need to ensure that all these things are functional, clean, and up-to-date for a bathroom to truly look good.

Concluding Thoughts

Decorating a bathroom doesn’t have to be complicated. You can create a space that looks good and works well for everyday use with very simple changes. The important thing to note is that small details can make a big difference in how the room feels.

So, whichever tip from our article feels like something that you’d want in your washroom, incorporate it. You don’t have to follow every step.
